Why in News?

Mr. Gadkari launches ‘Khadi Natural Paint’ – India’s first paint made from cow dung, developed by KVIC.

The paint is free from heavy metals like lead, mercury, chromiumarsenic, cadmium and others.

  • The eco-friendly, non-toxic paint, calledKhadi Prakritik Paintis a first-of-its-kind product, with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties.
  • Based on cow dung as its main ingredient
  • The paint is cost-effective and odorless, and has been certified by Bureau of Indian Standards.

Objectives:

  • It will improve the rural economy .
  • It will reduce migration  from the rural  to urban areas.
  • It will be a boost to local manufacturing and will create sustainable local employment through technology transfer.
  • This technology will increase consumption of cow dung as a raw material for eco-friendly products and will generate additional revenue to farmers and Gaushalas.
  • Utilization of cow dung will also clean the environment and prevent clogging of drains.

Khadi Prakritik Paint is available in two forms – distemper paint and plastic emulsion paint.

What is Distemper paint?

  • The basic constituent of Distemper Paint is chalk, lime, and water. Distemper Paint is also known as cement paint.
  • This is called so because such kind of paint can be applied directly on cement walls without any other coating on them without using the primer.

What is Plastic Emulsion Paint?

  • An emulsion paint has acrylic resin, (other resins too like SB-Latex, Poly Vinyl Acetate etc) in an emulsion form.
  • It acts as a binder or adhesive on the surface.

Dzukou Valley Reason for discussion: A fierce fire in the famous Jukou Valley, located on the border of Manipur and Nagaland, could be extinguished after two weeks of incineration, causing great damage to the environment.

About Zukou Valley:

  1. It is situated on the borders of the states of Nagaland and Manipur.
  2. It is famous for ‘Dzüko Lily’ flowers and these flowers are found only in this valley.
  3. Asian Highway-1 (NH-1) and Highway-2 (NH-2) also pass through its foothills.
