Why in news: Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh visited the Karwar Naval Base in Karnataka to review the progress of ongoing infrastructure development under ‘Project Seabird’.

• Name of Naval Base: INS Kadamba
• After completion of project,  INS Kadamba will become the largest naval base of India, and also the largest naval base east of the Suez Canal.

Why Karwar

• Karwar has a natural deep-water harbour and considerable land area for expansion to accommodate larger aircraft carriers.
• Karwar is very close to the world’s busiest shipping route between the Persian Gulf and east Asia and beyond the range of most strike aircraft from neighboring countries.
