One-day state mourning declared in India over demise of ex-Mauritius President Anerood Jugnauth

As a mark of respect to former President of Mauritius Anerood Jugnauth, there will be one day’s State Mourning today throughout India. Mr Jugnauth passed away on Thursday. Today, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on the day of the mourning throughout India on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day.

Anerood Jugnauth served as 4th President of Mauritius from October 2003 to March 2012. He was Prime Minister of the island nation from June 1982 to December 1995, from September 2000 to October 2003 and from December 2014 to January 2017. The Indian-origin leader was honored by India with Padma Vibhushan and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.

Expressing grief on the demise of Anerood Jugnauth, President Ram Nath Kovind said,  a global statesman, a visionary leader, a Padma Vibhushan and an extraordinary friend of India, his landmark contributions to India- Mauritius relations will always be remembered.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said, Sir Anerood Jugnauth was a great statesman and leader who oversaw the remarkable development of Mauritius. Mr Naidu said, in his demise, India has lost a special friend who furthered the long-standing India-Mauritius relationship to greater heights.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, Padma Vibhushan Sir Anerood Jugnauth, a tall leader and statesman, was the architect of modern Mauritius. He said, a proud Pravasi Bharatiya, Sir Anerood Jugnauth helped forge the special bilateral relationship that will benefit from his legacy.

Mr Modi spoke to Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth who is the son of the departed leader and conveyed heartfelt condolences. The Prime Minister said he will be remembered as one of the tallest leaders of the Indian Ocean Region and a principal architect of India's special friendship with Mauritius.
