New IT rules for Social Media

  • Digital media platforms now require a larger grievance redressal mechanism which will include a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Contact Person and a Resident Grievance Officer.
  • All social media platforms are required to publish these details on their apps and websites and explain to users the mechanism in place to make a complaint against any content on the platform
  • Resident grievance officer should be based out of India

Section 79 of the IT Act

  • Section 79 says any intermediary shall not be held legally or otherwise liable for any third party information, data, or communication link made available or hosted on its platform.
  • The intermediary must not tamper with any evidence of these messages or content present on its platform, failing which it lose its protection under the Act.
