Khelo India University Games: Ann Mariya breaks National Record in clean, Jerk category in 87 kg category weightlifting

Ann Mariya setting a new National record in the 87 kg women weightlifting competition was the highlight of day five of Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The Gold winning weightlifter from Mangalore University lifted 129 kg to break Manpreet Kaur’s clean and jerk record of 128 kgs at the National Championships earlier this year. Ann Mariya was trained at the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. During the day 17 medals were on offer across five sports. Jain University with 11 Gold, four Silver and two Bronze remains on top of the medal tally. By the end of the day 63 Universities had made their presence felt on the medal table and 29 among them winning Gold medals. Rasika Kulve and Gajanan Khandagale from Savitribai Phule University, Pune defeated Manini Kaushik and Yash Vardhan duo of Manipal University in the mixed 10 m Air Rifle to clinch Gold. University of Madras won Gold in the Women’s basketball match beating SRM University. In the 400 m individual medley event in Men swimming Siva Sridhar of Jain University broke his own Games record to win Gold. In 800 m freestyle swimming event V Preetha from Bangalore University won Gold followed by V Varsha of University of Madras winning Silver and P.M Abhishikta of Sri Ramachandra Institute winning Bronze.
